Digs start at 10:30am, 1pm, 2pm
This 30-minute interactive exhibit will introduce children to archaeology, and how we know what we know about the lives of the enslaved and free people living and working at Monticello. Archaeologists-in-training will dig in a mock excavation where they will learn proper field techniques, including digging, screening, and identifying artifacts.
Adults must remain with their children while they dig but do not require a ticket. We recommend this activity for children between the ages of 7 to 13. Please note that children will get dirty. We recommend that families schedule their house tour for 2 hours before or after the start of the archaeology activity. For example, if joining the 1 pm archaeology dig, the house tour time should be before 11am or after 3pm.
Offered in conjunction with the Archaeology Open House. This activity is weather dependent.
